// How We Work

From drawing to finished part.

  1. 01

    Drawing Review & CAM Programming

    Engineering drawings reviewed for GD&T callouts, datum structure, and critical features. Native CAD (STEP, IGES) preferred over PDF for accuracy. Tool paths programmed for the right machine, VMC, horizontal, or lathe, based on part geometry and volume.

  2. 02

    Material & Stock Procurement

    Bar stock, plate, or near-net blanks sourced with Mill Test Reports. Heat lot identification marked at receiving and carried through to finished part. DFARS specialty metals flowdown verified when applicable to the contract.

  3. 03

    Setup & Fixturing

    Workholding selected to meet rigidity, repeatability, and access requirements for the called-out features. 4th-axis fixturing used on the VF-4 mills for multi-side work; pallet changer fixturing staged on the EC-500 horizontal for production runs.

  4. 04

    CNC Machining & In-Process Inspection

    Production runs against the validated program. Operators verify critical features in-process per the inspection plan, first-piece, periodic, and at tool changes. Out-of-tolerance trends are caught before a full lot is cut.

  5. 05

    Final QC & Delivery

    Final dimensional inspection per the drawing. First Article Inspection completed when required by contract. Material certifications and Certificate of Conformance compiled. Parts deburred, marked, and packaged before shipment.

// Capabilities & Materials

What we machine, and on what.

Machining Operations

  • Copper
  • UHMW

Specific alloy, grade, temper, and condition called out per the customer's drawing and material specification.

// RFQ Checklist

What to send with your machining RFQ.

The more specific your RFQ, the faster and more accurate the quote. These six items cover what we need to produce a defensible lead-time and price commitment on prototype and production CNC machining work.

  • Drawing or native CAD with GD&T

    STEP, IGES, DXF, or native CAD preferred. Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing callouts, datums, feature control frames, and reference dimensions, drive setup planning and inspection method. PDF-only drawings extend programming time while we re-create geometry.

  • Material specification

    Alloy, grade, temper, and condition. For DFARS-flowed work, indicate the specialty metals clause flowdown so we can source through qualifying-country mills and carry Mill Test Reports with the part.

  • Tolerance requirements

    Critical-to-function tolerances called out on the drawing. Default block tolerances applied to non-critical features. If a feature has a tighter tolerance than the title block, mark it explicitly so it gets routed to the right machine and inspection plan.

  • Surface finish

    Surface roughness (Ra) per feature, where required. Cosmetic-versus-functional acceptance criteria. Post-machining finishing, deburr, bead blast, anodize, paint, plate, anything downstream of the last cutting pass.

  • Quantity and production volume

    Prototype vs production. First-article quantity. Expected annual usage. Lot sizing drives setup amortization, fixturing investment, and machine selection between the VMC, the EC-500 horizontal, and the manual mill.

  • Contract flowdowns

    ITAR, DFARS specialty metals, NIST 800-171 / CMMC, FAR cybersecurity clauses, First Article Inspection requirements, and any quality-system flowdowns that apply to the part.

// Common Questions

What procurement engineers ask about machining.

  • FAQ · 01 / 06

    Does NTM machine in-house or outsource to a partner shop?

    In-house. NTM operates (2) Haas VF-4 vertical machining centers with HRT310 4th axis, a Haas EC-500 horizontal machining center with pallet changer, an ENCO 100-529 Bridgeport vertical mill, (3) FlexArm RNR-20 pneumatic tapping arms, a Baileigh DP-1200VS drill press, and a Haas ST30 40HP plus Haas ST25 CNC lathe. All milling, turning, drilling, and tapping happens on the same shop floor as cutting, forming, welding, and finishing.

  • FAQ · 02 / 06

    What's the largest part NTM can machine?

    Maximum part size depends on the machine, VMC, horizontal, or lathe, and on workholding and fixturing for the specific geometry. Share the drawing or a STEP file with overall envelope, and we'll confirm which machine is the right home for the part.

  • FAQ · 03 / 06

    Does NTM offer threading?

    Yes. Threading is a sub-capability of the Machining service via (3) FlexArm RNR-20 pneumatic tapping arms and the Baileigh DP-1200VS drill press for drilled-and-tapped features, plus single-point and threaded features cut on the Haas ST30 and ST25 lathes. CNC-milled threaded features run on the VF-4 mills and the EC-500 horizontal.

  • FAQ · 04 / 06

    What lathe capacity does NTM have?

    Two Haas CNC lathes: the Haas ST30 (40HP main spindle) and the Haas ST25. Between them they cover most shaft, bushing, fitting, and rotational-part work for prototype through production quantities. Specific bar capacity and chuck size confirmed per part during quote review.

  • FAQ · 05 / 06

    Does NTM machine stainless steel and aluminum?

    Yes. Stainless and aluminum are standard materials on the VF-4 mills, the EC-500 horizontal, and the ST30 / ST25 lathes. Mild steel, high-strength steel grades, and brass are also routine. Specific alloy, temper, and condition called out per the customer's drawing and material specification, including any DFARS specialty metals flowdown for defense work.

  • FAQ · 06 / 06

    What tolerances does NTM hold?

    Tolerances are quoted feature-by-feature from the drawing's GD&T callouts. Block tolerances apply to non-critical dimensions; tighter tolerances on critical features are routed to the right machine and the right inspection plan during quote review. Send the drawing. We'll confirm what's quotable and what needs a tolerance conversation.

// Quality Control
